 | We are living in a society where we are socialized to be in competition with other women. From the time we are young girls, we are bombarded with all kinds of messages from the media that consciously or unconsciously cause us to feel inadequate. We have to walk a certain way; have to talk a certain way; have to dress a certain way, have to be shaped in a certain way; have to use certain products. The media convince us that we need a certain kind of perfume so that someone will grab a bunch of flowers on impulse because he finds us irresistible. If we examine these messages we realize that these commercials are suggesting that we need to be fixed or improved – or risk not being loved or accepted. Instead of seeing each other as sisters, often times women’s relationships are characterized by jealousy, gossip, and competition .
